Blog Post #6 - Life Of Galileo
Brecht explains in THREE NOTES ON THE CHARACTER OF GALILEO 1.[The new type of physicist], "My Galileo is a powerful physicist with a tummy on him, a face like Socrates, a vociferous, full-blooded man with a sense of humour, the new type of physicist, earthly, a great teacher. Favourite attitude: stomach thrust forward, both hands on the buttocks, head back, using one meaty hand all the time to gesticulate with, but with precision; comfortable trousers for working in, shirt-sleeves or (particularly) a logn whitish-yellow robe with broad sleeves, tied with a cord round his stomach... in other words: realistic" (117). Despite Brecht's description of Galileo being extremely specific and clearly thought out, Galileo's appearance is never mentioned in the text of the play. How does having a description of Galileo influence the reader's opinion or perception of him? If Brecht did not give a description of Galileo, how might different directer's interpretations of Galileo impact the play?
