“He considered it a trick of his whimsical fate to have searched for the sea without finding it, at the cost of countless sacrifices and suffering, and to have found it all of a sudden without looking for it, as if it lay across his path like an insurmountable object” (Marquez 12).
I thought that this quote was interesting because I like that there is a build up of action and disappointment only to lead to an interesting, unexpected conclusion. There is a build up of buendia secluding himself and making his discoveries. He is so successful and then gets to a point where he can make further discoveries to benefit the people of the town which he has created, but now has to work around challenges that he is faced with.
I also think that this quote shows another idea that I’ve been thinking about which is the description and imagery that Marquez uses in his writing. Another quote which I found interesting which shows this description is “for a week, almost without speaking, they went ahead like sleepwalkers through a universe of grief, lighted only by the tenuous reflection of luminous insects, and their lungs were overwhelmed by a suffocating smell of blood” (Marquez 11). I think this quote is so descriptive and puts such a unique and distinct view in my mind which makes me understand the emotion of what their journey was like.
