This week, you will write a discussion question for the group that’s focused on Life of Galileo and the supplementary texts about the play you’re currently reading.
Ultimately, good discussion questions should accomplish three goals. First, they should be specific enough to indicate that you have read the assigned reading. Secondly, they should be a true reflection of topics that you would find interesting to have the class discuss. Third, they should represent questions that you honestly have about Brecht, Life of Galileo, his performance theories, or “epic theater.” Whenever possible you should ask questions to which you really want to find or hear the answers. Effective questions will:
- Stimulate conversation
- Focus on something specific (avoid plot or summary)
- Be easily understood by everyone
- Solicit answers beyond yes or no, or answers that can be easily answered by looking back to the text (that is, ask open-ended questions that provoke thought and/or a personal response or interpretation)
- Excite, interest, challenge your fellow students
These questions will guide our conversation this week. Be prepared to present your question to the class and work through the question yourself. Questions should not exceed 200 words.
I’m looking forward to it!
