Blog Post #10 Othello

Duke: "Goodnight to every one. To Brabantio. And, noble signior, If virtue no delighted beauty lack, Your son-in-law is far more fair than black." (49)

There are many innuendo about race in Othello. Duke's line implies the discrimination and stereotype towards black people. He seems to compliment Othello but slander his ethnicity. And according to the meaning and usage of "black" during that time, "black" also means ugly, which is kind of contrast with the beauty in the former phrase. This line shows Othello's position and achievement is not easy, due to the ignorance of people it is hard for him to prove his ability in Venice.
