This blog will be a record of our collective reading over the course of the semester. It will be a place for us to compile our knowledge, interests, questions, and/or musings about the texts we read this semester.
You will create a new entry every week. You will choose one passage (ranging from one to twenty lines) from the assigned reading and include a few sentences about why the passage was selected and what questions it raises about the assigned text or the course material more broadly. I also encourage you to post links, images, videos, music, or any other content that you find relevant to your chosen passage. Please post your entries by 8pm on Tuesday night before class so everyone has the opportunity to read your entry.
I'll be sure to post a little something every week too. This week, I've included some of my favorite Northanger Abbey memes, a link to the really charming Northanger Abbey film, and a fascinating webseries based on Northanger Abbey:
Because sassy Jane is my favorite Jane:
Because Thorpe is the worst and it should be acknowledged:
Because who hasn't been there:
Because someone found the perfect screen shot for this and it needs to be appreciated:
This is the full-length 2007 Northanger Abbey film. While it's not required watching, it's particularly good at adapting the tone and images of Catherine's fantasies (which we will talk more about next week):
Finally, here's a cute little project called "The Cate Morland Chronicles," which presents itself as a vlog-style webseries based on Northanger Abbey. It provokes questions about medium, adaptation, and contemporary gender politics:
I'll see you all on Wednesday to talk about the first half of Jane Austen's challenging, charming, and complex text! Looking forward to it!
