“She liked him so much from that first meeting that she fixed things so that he would win the accordion in the raffle. At the end of two weeks Aureliano Segundo realized that the woman had been going to bed alternatively with him and his brother, thinking that they were the same man, and instead of making things clear, he arranged to prolong the situation” (Marquez 187).

I think that this quote emphasized some of the main themes and plot points that have come up in this book. First, the sharing of women between men in the same family is one reoccurring event that happens. An example is Pilar having children with both Colonel Aureliano Buendia and Jose Arcadio, brothers. Also, the relationships that men have with the women in the novel seem fluid and as if they are temporary and that relationships aren’t meant to last forever. Also, I think that this emphasizes the theme of fluidity of relationships and incest that occurs in the novel. It almost seems like incestual relationships are normalized starting with Ursula and Jose Arcadio Buendia and branching to their children and lineage. I think Marquez made all of the characters have similar names because they are all so closely related (too closely by incest) and why all of the male characters seem similar to one another and hard to distinguish.
