Galileo Week 7

Brecht creates a disclaimer that the play is not meant to cast a negative light upon the Roman Catholic Church. However, when reading the play one gets the sense that there is a fearful notion towards the church. The church is not meant to be the antagonist yet we see fearfulness from everyone who encounter Galileo's discovery because of the possibility of persecution in an oppressed society.

"But in this play there is also no question of the church being admonished: 'Hands off science!' Modern science is a legitimate daughter of the church, a daughter who has emancipated herself and turned against the mother" (Brecht, 116).

Do you agree with Brecht's statement about the church not being the oppressor and in fact is the mother of science? Did Brecht face any dilemmas of his own when casting the church in a negative light due to the power of the church that still has a stronghold on modern society?
