Do you think the other Venetians believe the story of the handkerchiefs origin? Where else in the play is there evidence of the Venetians attraction to Othello's storytelling?
- I think Emilia and Cassio have every right to believe Othello’s stories because of his well respected position from being a military leader. Othello was also seen as a level headed man, which can be seen in his military tactics, and someone who would have no reason to lie. Emilia and Cassio both seem to respect Othello like other characters like the Duke in scene 1 when Othello is accused of witchcraft. The Duke did not believe the accusations against Othello without evidence and allowed him to defend himself because of his respect for his military prowess. Iago, on the other hand, has other reasons to believe Othello’s tale of being involved with black magic in his family. Iago seems to be a pretty racist and sexist character therefore Iago would most likely buy into stereotypes like black magic being associated with Moors like Barbantio accuses him of using in the beginning. Furthermore, Othello comes across as a great storyteller as this is the basis of Desdemona falling in love with him in the first place and what keeps her from ever wavering in that love.
Question: Is Iago's need for revenge against Othello because he thinks Othello slept with his wife or because of Iago's pure evil nature? Iago seems to never have any empathy for any characters and no regard for life as his actions cause many deaths. Even after being caught he still seems to not regret any of his actions.
